WOOD SKILLS
It's fun to do little things that can make children happy by the use of woods.
My partner Eric is doing this hobby for a long time.
I am amazed how we can still create object or character by using small piece of wood.
It's my first time to witness this while Eric is cutting it one by one due to he will have his workshop again with the Japanese students.
I now understand how it is difficult to work for woods but who could've imagine that even d last piece is still usable.
1. U need to create and print character, stick it into d wood and make it as a pattern.. We choose butterfly, heart, star, dolphin and bat (why bat? I don't know....Just in case motif is for holloween)
2. May makina para ma cut ang image. I took video of it
3. Then, we used sand paper (LIHA in tagalog) to make these woods skinny, we need to make the surface smooth because its dangerous for children if woods are not properly skinned.
4. Then, Eric has this special Oil that is made of Olives. I will show you one time how he manage to do press this olives into oil. There's a small seed on it and its too difficult to press and create oil of it, that's why he always say "OIL is precious" only few knew about how oil can be produced.
Then, here it is!
This will be presented to d japanese students where Eric used to teach abt environment and wood crafts.
Workshop is really fun and exciting esp when it's related to kids.
it's so rare for foreigners that speak fluent Japanese while my partner does...reason why he is encouraging me a lot.
Kids will try to do d same thing by their own, cut the shape, use d paper sand then oil it.
We have plans to export some for ages 1-5 :-)
I just need to arrange it with good packing.
I like it because its educational and environmental friendly pa.

Eric and Matte started doing this wood works specifically "Toys for the kids"
From cutting into different shapes to fixing the sharp edges to sanding and oiling.
We also had brainstorm about layout and packaging for finished product to be more presentable.
This will serve as our Christmas gift for the kids inside the member of family and our friends' kids.
Here's a definition of each wood blocks we created.
Where it came from, how it was collected,
how the scrap wood will turn into new.

5 variety kinds of Japanese woods:
Japanese black pine, Japanese white oak, Japanese cherry tree, Japanese Kiyaki, Japanese Sugi and Cypress wood

Base on Eric's explanation about the use of woods,
all these types are used in architecture like old temples in Japan.

We have small left over or scrap wood, we re-use it to create these wooden blocks.
With touch of Camellia Oil for finishing the skin.
MIRROR MADE FROM KEYAKI WOOD
(blog 11.26.17)
Another beautiful creation made from a piece of scrap wood
Japanese Keyaki wood
35x43 inches
Approximately 15kg
We planned to make a simple washbowl on the upper level of our house
and it will be perfect if we will match it with a simple but big wooden framed mirror.
And here it looks...

Matte being the layout artist that collects and assembles type styles and images,
such as illustrations, photographs and logos
creating a visual design in her desk that results into extraordinary kind of digital carving.
While Eric as a woodwork specialist himself has this machine
that can cut several types of shapes to find and save ideas about scrap wood projects.
Known as a graphic designer and woodwork hobbyist - combined forces,
delivering information through visual communications
and enhancing wood scraps into new,
Eric and Matte played their ideas on these woods and here are the outputs...
A nameplate identifies and displays a person or product's name.
As a beginner, Eric and Matte decided to create a rectangular / semi-square shaped
to laser carve a name of some colleagues at work, friends in our industry
as a present / gift for this new year (2018).
The primary wood that we use for this nameplates / nametag is KEYAKI.
For informative use as in an office environment, where could be mounted on a desk,
a flat for calling cards or can be used as bag tag.

Eric and Matte did a simple mat that can be used for an ordinary glass,
wine glass and even a tea cup... best known as COASTER.

With a choice of "Kamon" - a traditional family seal (in japanese)
and a name as personalized label.
Don't throw those scrap wood away!
Check and it might still be useable.
It'll be fantastic once you made it perfectly...
some useful ideas when you need to get rid of scrap lumber in garage
like this small woodened USB case.
While Eric is continuously building big furniture plans like cabinets,
door restorations, designing chairs and tables for home use,
expect it might have that much scrap.

This is what to do with the leftovers... (see pictures below)
Matte as a layout artist and Eric who teaches woods with Japanese kids
needs to store some of their important files...
Presenting our personalized "IBUKI WOOD USB"
Now, we can keep our files safe and easy to identify because of its label.
